Modern & Minimalist House Design

Reducing a house to fewer moves raises the standard each one has to meet. A flush threshold, a shadow gap, a wall that meets a ceiling without a trim — each is a detail that has to be designed and then built to a tolerance.

We draw those details rather than leaving them to be improvised on site, because a minimalist house improvised on site stops being minimalist very quickly.

Clean rooms are usually the result of early mechanical and electrical planning rather than restraint in furnishing. Risers, plant, routing and returns have to be planned into the building before the ceilings are set.

Coordinating them with the architecture as it develops is what avoids the dropped ceiling, the boxed-in pipe and the retrofitted plant room — the three things that undo a calm interior.

With less in a room, light does the work that ornament does elsewhere. Opening size, orientation, depth of reveal and shading all become compositional decisions rather than technical ones.

They are also decisions best judged against an image rather than a plan, which is why visualisation sits inside the design service rather than being bought separately once the drawings are finished.
